A few weeks ago I had to go to the Chelsea Market (which is a place you have to visit if you are ever in New York, and if you live in New York, you should visit it more often) , and outside the Fruit and Veg shop they were giving away samples of this recipe. It was so delicious I had to go home immediately and make it.
It’s sweet, spicy, salty, tart and savoury all at once – so unexpected and so refreshing – a perfect accompaniment to a grilled steak, chicken or fish….or eat it on its own. You don’t need alot per person, I think it’s almost better to treat it as a relish, so this recipe serves 4.
4 large or 6 small just-ripe peaches (you don’t want them too ripe otherwise they become mushy)
Juice of one lime
2 teaspoons superfine sugar
Half a jalapeno chili (optional, of course)
2 tablespoons (or more if you like) chopped cilantro/coriander
Mix the lime juice and sugar together in a separate bowl, then pour over the peaches.
Chop the chilli and cilantro, add to peaches and mix well
And voila, there it is.
